Castell de Santa Fiorentina - Canet de Mar
A surprising castle with stunning modernist details and some ‘Game of Thrones’ magic
Santa Florentina isn’t your typical castle. While its origins date back to an 11th-century fortified farmhouse, most of what stands today was built in the late 19th century by Ramon de Montaner, with his nephew, Lluís Domènech i Montaner, a key figure in Catalan modernisme.
But don’t let that fool you—this place exudes grandeur! With towers, chandeliers, gargoyles, and intricate stained glass windows, it’s no wonder it was featured in Game of Thrones (season 6, episode 6).
One of Maresme’s top attractions, the privately owned castle offers two types of visits: a 45-minute audio tour (Tuesday to Saturday, available in 8 languages) and two 90-minute guided tours on Saturdays (one in Catalan and the other in Spanish). Expect to explore the courtyard of arms, throne room, dining room, library, bedrooms, and even a rather fancy bathroom.
Beneath all this modernist beauty lie the remains of a Roman settlement, later transformed into a fortified farmhouse to fend off pirate attacks—though this ancient fort isn’t open to visitors.
Visiting with kids
The castle is packed with stunning elements that will capture the imagination of kids and adults alike—towers, luxurious furniture, sparkling chandeliers, gargoyles, sculptures, rich tapestries, and beautiful modernist stained glass windows.
✅ Tips and suggestions!
If you're visiting with babies or toddlers, bring a carrier, as prams aren’t allowed due to the stairs.
The audio tour is a great option for families since it’s shorter, and if little ones get restless, you can adjust the pace.
For older kids who can walk comfortably and stay engaged, this visually rich tour is absolutely worth it.
Keep in mind there are no picnic areas, but you can buy a selection of refreshments and snacks at the end of the tour.
Best time to go
The best day depends on whether you prefer a self-paced audio tour or a more in-depth guided visit—but don’t forget to book in advance on the castle’s website.
Want to make a day of it? Combine your visit with a one-hour hike through the surrounding woods and head up to Creu de Canet, a modernist cross offering stunning views over Canet de Mar.
